Lemongrass, commonly cultivated as culinary and medicinal herbs because of their scent, belongs to the grass family, Poaceae. Lemongrass is widely used as a culinary herb in Asian cuisine and as a medicinal herb in India. It has a subtle citrus flavour. The essential oil of Lemongrass is used for perfumery application. Lemongrass essential oil is obtained by the steam distillation of grass of Cymbopogon Flexuosus. The oil is golden yellow to brownish yellow in colour. It is a free-flowing liquid, with a characteristic citrus-lemony odour. Citral, Geraniol, Geranyl acetate are its major components.
